Located on the southern outskirts of Dijon at the northern end of the Cote de Nuits, Marsannay missed out when the first Villages appellations were handed out in 1930. But it wasn't because the terroir was deemed inferior. It was simply that there was very little Chardonnay or Pinot Noir planted.

The terroir of Marsannay is based on the same complex Jurassic limestone-based geology that runs the entire length of the Cote d'Or. But for the previous hundred years or more, Marsannay's winemakers had been focused on the growing suburban population of Dijon. A task made much more commercially successful with wines made from Aligote and Gamay.

The Collottes have been grape growers in Marsannay for four generations, but it wasn't until 1981 that a young, 16 year-old Philippe Collotte bottled the first wine under the name of Domaine Collotte. He subsequently purchased some mature vineyards of about 40 years of age in both Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny, to further expand the domaine's repertoire.

In 2013 Philippe was joined by his daughter Isabelle, who had just completed her viticulture and oenology studies at the Lycee Viticole de Beaune. Whilst Isabelle focuses particularly on the production of the domaine's white wines, there is no doubt that her addition to the team has helped refine the quality of the wines across the board.

A task made much more commercially successful with wines made from Aligote and Gamay.

The Collottes have been grape growers in Marsannay for four generations, but it wasn't until 1981 that a young, 16 year-old Philippe Collotte bottled the first wine under the name of Domaine Collotte. Hailing from one of Burgundy's most famed families (Coche-Dury was part of the same domaine until 1940 and is run by his cousin Raphael), Fabien has quickly become the Coche of the current generation making the most waves. His enviable vineyard holdings total nearly 11 hectares spread across Meursault, Monthelie, Pommard and Auxey-Duresses.

Fabien Coche’s father is a first cousin of Jean-Francois Coche-Dury and it is not so long ago that the two domaines shared almost identical labels. I would place the style of his wines in-between that of his cousins Coche-Dury and Roulot. Fabiens wines have the acidity and purity of Roulot without the trademark SO2 which tends to mark Roulots wines when young, and also without the extravagant luxuriant texture that so defines the wines of Coche-Dury. Here we simply find real old vine depth delivering some of the purest expressions of each vineyard site that we have seen right the way through the range from Aligote right to the very top.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0115/8329/1492/products/FabienCocheMeursaultChevaliers2018.jpg?v=1610693200
paul-chavy-saint-aubin-sur-gamay-2022
Paul Chavy Saint-Aubin Sur Gamay 1er Cru 2022

Variety: Chardonnay
Country Region: France, Burgundy, Côte-de-Beaune
Appellation: Saint-Aubin 1er Cru

This beautifully sited Premier Cru lies just above La Chateniere and also adjoins Les Murgers des Dents de Chien on one side and Les Champlots on the other side. Having previously worked in Oregon, Gautier is now establishing Domaine Desvignes as one of the leading producers in Givry.

Like many producers in the Côte Chalonnaise, Domaine Desvignes used to sell their fruit to big négociants in the Côte d’Or. Historically, their Pinot Noir clones were selected for quantity over quality. Before agreeing to take over from his father, Gautier insisted that the domaine be replanted with Pinot Fin clones, which produce lower yields of small berries, resulting in concentrated, high-quality fruit. Sustainability is also a key part of Gautier’s philosophy. He has proven that by investing energy into the vineyard, avoiding chemicals and adapting vinification to best express the grape variety and site, Givry can produce precise, elegant wines rather than the ‘rustic’ and tannic style it was previously known for.

Although white wines represent just under 20% of Givry’s production, they are gaining popularity thanks to their quality and affordability. Gautier produces a Givry Village Blanc ‘En Chenèves’, which is fermented and aged in used 400-litre barrels to better integrate the oak. The result is a rounded wine defined by stone fruit character and lively acidity (a hallmark of the clay-limestone soils to the south of the Givry appellation).

Gauthier’s Givry Rouge comprises a selection of parcels from across the village, each vinified separately in used oak barrels for 12 months before being blended and aged for an additional four months in tank. The resulting wine has a nose typical of Givry with ripe, dark fruit aromas, while the palate shows good concentration and a vibrant finish. Gauthier’s 1er Cru ‘Clos Charlé’ is from a parcel towards the north of Givry planted on soils rich in iron oxide, ideally suited to Pinot Noir. It produces very expressive wines with great depth of flavour. The ‘Champ La Dame’ is 100% destemmed and aged for 12 months in oak, offering a seriously smart Givry with great freshness and crunchy fruit character. The 1er Cru ‘Les Ozymandias’ is Gautier’s ode to his daughter, born in 2022, and takes its name from a Percy Bysshe Shelley poem. It blends fruit from two small 1er Cru plots (‘Le Vernoy’ and ‘Crémillons’) and has the linear precision that runs through all the Domaine Desvignes wines.

Variety: Chardonnay
Country Region: France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune
Appellation: Saint-Romain

Made from a blend of 2 vineyards, Sous La Velle (west facing towards the village) and Le Jarron (southwest facing). The family can trace its roots back to 1645, but it was not until the two sons, Claude and Herve took over the domaine from Lucien in 1995 that it began bottling at the estate rather than selling to negociants. Today 85% of the production is red wine but the white wines are gaining in stature with several key premier cru parcels in Santenay being replanted with Chardonnay. Santenay borders Chassagne Montrachet to the north adjoining notable premier crus such as Morgeots, Les Embazees and Les Baudines. Clearly there is potential for white wines with much limestone apparent in a complex series of fractured geological faults where the Cote d'Or ends and turns the corner towards Maranges signalling the end of the Cote d'Or slope. Santenay contains a great variety of soil differences and vineyard expositions, the potential of which deserves discovery.

Reducing vine yields and adoption of some modern wine-making techniques has resulted in spotlessly pure, great value Burgundy. They started using small bins for harvesting, a vibrating sorting table and conveyor belts rather than pumps to keep crushing to an absolute minimum as well as acquiring a new temperature controlled fermentation facility with new wooden vats and a new precision controlled press. In 2005 they began managing the vineyard organically and ultimately gained certification for biodynamic farming in 2011. Following the incessant rains of spring 2012 however they relinquished this certification and today follow a lutte raisonee, or sustainable farming path.

They continue to plough their rows and shun any use of herbicides or pesticides, let alone chemical fertilizers. In the winery these days, more whole bunches are included, typically about a third, while there are no additions of yeast or enzymes. In tandem with the move to more whole-bunch, the extraction regime has moved away from punch-downs towards a gentler remontage (pump-over) approach, while elevage is moving towards both larger oak and a subtler new-oak influence. Indeed for the first time in vintage 2015, two large foudres were included in the elevage of the Maladiere.
