Since 1988, Etienne de Bonnaventure took over the farming of that 1 hectare assuming all viticulture and winemaking responsibilities and has grown the estate to its current 18 hectares, all situated on Chinon's plateaux. Planted mostly to Cabernet Franc (with a little Chenin blanc making both Chinon blanc and Touraine blanc) particular care is taken to re-plant using selection massale as they have done for generations.

The vineyards are organically farmed since 1997, being the first in the appellation to be certified organic, all grapes are hand-harvested and vinification follows a non-interventionalist path. Coulaine's low yields result in deeply concentrated, savoury and succulent expressions of Cabernet Franc with ripe and polished tannins - a harmonious balance between the traditional and modern worlds. Since 1988, Etienne de Bonnaventure took over the farming of that 1 hectare assuming all viticulture and winemaking responsibilities and has grown the estate to its current 18 hectares, all situated on Chinon's plateaux. There follows a supple, polished and charming palate, with nicely balanced fruit and acidity, and barely a lick of tannin showing through. Charming, fragrant and perfumed, with a lovely sense of freshness, and nothing overdone. This will be drinking well within a year or two. The alcohol is about 13%. It speaks of low yields in its concentration and has an abundance of powdery tannins that coats the palate. Here the village is situated on a limestone plateau as distinct from the gravel soils which Bourgueil mostly finds itself on. The limestone plateau sits a little higher than the sand and gravel soils which are located close to the Loire River. It is arguably the combination of clay and limestone which give wines of Benais, and other areas of Bourgueil, more structure and ageing potential. There is of course even more limestone below the sand and gravel of the Loire River, this is usually chalk of the Lower Turonian as distinct to the Upper or Middle Turonian limestone more typical of Benais.

At any rate the wines of Benais on the middle to upper slopes have great ageing potential, indeed some decades ago I imported the wines of J-P Druet whose wines are still showing beautifully even though his estate has since been sold and split up. They plow the soil, maintain a cover crop between vineyard rows, use bud-pruning and green harvests to limit their yields to under 40 hl/ha, and thin the canopy three weeks before harvesting. This level of attention to detail is part of the secret to their success. The limestone plateau sits a little higher than the sand and gravel soils which are located close to the Loire River. It is arguably the combination of clay and limestone which give wines of Benais, and other areas of Bourgueil, more structure and ageing potential. They plow the soil, maintain a cover crop between vineyard rows, use bud-pruning and green harvests to limit their yields to under 40 hl/ha, and thin the canopy three weeks before harvesting. This level of attention to detail is part of the secret to their success.
